Motorcycle racing in the USA used to be a huge spectator sport.  Big enough that they held an ST and a TT race in one weekend at the Houston Astrodome.   According to memory, the engine limit for AMA Short Track (ST) races was 250cc for 2-strokes.

The fastest film I could find in those days was ASA 400 (ISO 400).  The color shots here were exposed at 400.  The B&W images were exposed for ISO 1600 and pushed in processing.

After the rider introductions. To the right of this image we can see #53 Tim Mertens.

Many thanks to www.AMANationalNumber.com for publishing a historical record of national numbers !

That would be a young Scott Parker next to #11

I can not remember what year the AMA ‘changed things’, but at least up through 1982, national plate numbers were issued based on total points received for  short track, mile, TT, and road racing all added up.

#11 Scott Parker coming up on #59 Mickey Fay

Scott Pearson #95 just to the outside of Jimmy Filice #17

#67 Bubba Shobert, #72 Steve Hall, #10 Billy Labrie

#1 plate for 1982 was Mike Kidd

#21 Eddie Lawson, #18 Terry Poovey
